The Global Analytical Sciences (GAS) organization at Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. partners with members of the technology community to define approaches and solve problems for new product development, technical service, and operational excellence areas. They develop, transfer, or access new methods and capabilities to facilitate research or operations decision-making. To support growth in our organic polymeric driven technologies, (organic electronic thin films, membranes, surfactants, epoxy curing agents, and urethane chemicals), Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. is seeking a polymer characterization scientist to work within our Analytical Sciences Group in Allentown, PA. This position requires a Ph.D degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science with an emphasis on fluid rheology and related areas. This individual should have expertise in understanding material characterization with the goal of establishing structure/property relationships. The person will be expected to work closely with other technology subject matter experts in GAS and our product development/research groups to develop or access new methods.

He/she will play an important role by:
• Merging knowledge of polymers and their applications with characterization to solve problems;
• Partnering with members in technology to understand context of problem;
• Working with other GAS members to broaden his/her problem-solving skills;
• Developing/pioneering state of the art scientific tools relevant to Air Products’ business needs;
• Leading the ongoing maintenance, growth, and development of relevant rheology methodologies for Air Products;
• Leveraging external partnerships in the broader scientific community to extend capabilities;
• Proactively defining future needs for characterization science through technical presentation of capabilities, analytical representative roles on project teams, and on-going communication with key technology groups.

The individual needs to demonstrate good teamwork with other members of their work group; for example, sharing administrative tasks, equipment, knowledge and experience related to testing activities, experimental techniques in lab practices, and EH&S information. This position also requires active participation in the safety programs of the company, including regular attendance at safety meetings and support of the company’s BSP program.

The candidate must:
(1) Maintain and apply polymeric materials characterization know-how, with focus on fluids rheology methods and other tools to uncover materials characterization insight (50%).
(2) Collaborate with the Materials Characterization Team to deliver solutions to business problems involving dynamic mechanical analysis, thermal characterization, and physical testing (25%).
(3) Liaise with Air Products technologists (within research community and GAS) to understand characterization needs and develop problem-solving routes (25%).

The individual is responsible for organizing and managing all the operations related to his/her work responsibilities. Although there are no formal supervisory responsibilities, the ability to influence others within the work team and through project teams is a requirement.

This position requires a PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science or related experience. Relevant areas of expertise should include: Fluids rheology and Polymer characterization. A demonstrated ability to collaborate on multi-functional project teams is required.

To support growth in our materials chemistry technologies, (organic electronic thin films, advanced materials, surfactants, epoxy curing agents, and urethane chemicals), Air Products & Chemicals is seeking a liquid chromatography (LC) separation scientist to work within our Analytical Sciences Group in Allentown, PA. This position requires a BS degree in Chemistry + 2 – 10 years of relevant experience with LC methods. This individual should have expertise in using LC instruments to characterize unknown mixtures. He/she will be expected to work closely with technology subject matter experts in GAS and our product development/research groups to develop or access new methods.

He/she will play an important role by:

• Merging knowledge of chemistries and their applications with characterization to solve problems,
• Partnering with members in technology to understand context of problem,
• Working with other GAS members to broaden his/her problem-solving skills,
• Collaborating in the ongoing maintenance, growth, and development of relevant LC methodologies for Air Products.

The individual needs to demonstrate good teamwork with other members of their work group, for example sharing administrative tasks, equipment, knowledge and experience related to testing activities, experimental techniques in lab practices, and EH&S information. This position also requires active participation in the safety programs of the company, including regular attendance at safety meetings and support of the company’s BSP program. The individual's principal accountabilities will be to: (1) Analyze complex, non-aqueous soluble mixtures using state of the art LC technology; (2) Collaborate with Separations Team to deliver solutions to business problems involving LC chromatography characterization know-how, with focus on novel columns and multiple detectors to characterize complex materials; (3) Liaise with Air Products technologists (within research community and GAS) to understand characterization needs and develop problem-solving routes.

The individual will have access either directly or through teamwork with subject matter experts in GAS to a full array of in-house characterization techniques such as HPLC, UPLC, GPC, GC, IC, LC/MS, GC/MS, molecular spectroscopy, multinuclear NMR, etc. The individual will need to leverage external capabilities (contract labs, national labs, vendors) to expand our capabilities and manage our workloads. The individual will also provide input into new capital decisions to align our capabilities with the needs of this growing focus area for the company.

This position requires a degree in Chemistry plus relevant experience. Relevant areas of expertise should include LC instrumentation and a wide variety of LC detectors, including UV, ELSD, and CAD. A demonstrated ability to collaborate on multi-functional project teams is required.
