• Promote execution of best practice by having the engineering work implemented, and rigorously tested such that site engineers can include these during outages. Documenting these changes and features and training the site staff is also expected.
• Contribute new ideas to the Productivity and Best Practice communities. This position is well suited to initiate new ideas on reliability and productivity and be in a position to also bring these to fruition quickly
• Work with the GSS Team Leads, GEO Technology Managers, Process Engineering Team Leads, the appropriate Business asset managers to drive many of the best practices and productivity into the product line.
• Provide support to resolving other system systemic issues. To work on other issues off-line in identifying system wide systemic problems and engineering solutions. The engineer would also manage the implementation of these fixes.

The successful candidate should be versed in ABB Bailey and APACS control systems, and fully engaged in the Safety program. He/she should have good communication skills and work well in an collaborative environment. This position places a premium of organizational and documentation skills. The successful candidate shall be self motivated and capable of being self directed. A BS in one of the major engineering fields is required, with at least eight years of experience preferable.

The Principal Systems Engineer is a member of a highly specialized staff of professionals who provide mathematical and statistical consulting and analysis services primarily to scientific researchers, plant engineers, and business managers. This position is located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, and reports to the Manager of the Computational Modeling Center.

The incumbent is responsible for developing, conducting and participating in technical studies involving chemical process and product development with emphasis on process optimization and robust product design, through Design of Experiments (DOE) and multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component analysis and partial least squares (PCA/PLS). Additional responsibilities include plant data mining for performance monitoring, quality control and cycle time optimization to support plant operations. Primary customers are located in the technology, operations and business areas. The incumbent works independently on key projects, but most often participates in team efforts. In addition, it is important to seek out new application areas within APCI, where business needs and data modeling capabilities can be brought together profitably and possibly innovatively. A typical project will require the incumbent to understand a particular chemical process, aid in establishing the goals of a research study on that process, formulate a custom-made and cost-efficient experimental plan to achieve those goals, decide on an appropriate method of analysis, and report the results in a clear fashion. Frequently the goal of such a project is that of process optimization, and the incumbent must be familiar with such techniques in order to provide effective technical assistance. The methodology employed in any particular problem may be a classical one, but often, the problem will dictate the development of a creative methodology which is not found in the literature.

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Position requires a Ph.D. in Chemical / Industrial / Mechanical Engineering with background in engineering sciences, applied statistics and computational modeling techniques.
• 0-5 years of experience in industrial problem solving with emphasis on analyzing process data coming from multiple sources and sensors including digital images.
• The incumbent must have strong knowledge of the state-of-the-art methods in data mining, numerical analysis and mathematical optimization, simulation techniques, and statistical sciences.
• Experience with process monitoring and fault diagnosis technologies, batch process optimization and control is a big plus.
• Proficiency with stochastic modeling and optimization techniques for business data mining and reliability engineering.
• Strong programming skills with strong proficiency in SAS, MATLAB and other data mining tools.
• Excellent communication skills are a must.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide integrated consulting services in statistical modeling, numerical analysis and computational engineering sciences to the internal research and engineering community.
2. Perform applied research for process and product improvement through the combination of first principles engineering science models and computational techniques. Work with universities and external research organizations as required.
3. Perform Process data analysis from plants for performance monitoring, quality control and cycle time optimization.
4. Develop mathematical and statistical models, solve numerical problems, write specific code as needed, and effectively perform applications testing to ensure robust performance.
5. Communicate technical results to a wide audience in a manner that the solution strategy and business impact are readily understood.
6. Teach in-house courses on topics including, DOE, Regression Analysis, Multivariate Quality Control.

The position is part of the Materials Deposition Applications Group, Materials Research Center, whose mission is to translate new Air Products technology into high value materials that enable our key customers to fabricate flexible and printed electronic devices.

The key responsibility of this position is to support the development and commercialization of solution-processable HIL materials for use in electronics devices such as OLEDs and OPVs.

The candidate requires a good knowledge of device physics and should be able to fabricate experimentation devices to support the evaluation of our materials development and provide guidance on how to enhance performance. The new materials will be typically applied via spin coating and/or ink jet, screen or gravure printing application, so familiarity and comfort with established and/or new and emerging application techniques is required.

The candidate will work closely with our Advanced Materials and/or Electronics commercial development teams, ensuring business sponsorship for the work and clarity on target applications and customers. Success will also require close technical coordination with our synthesis and specialty polymer teams within MRC. This will include coordination on prototype targets, formulating and testing priority, new project development and so on.

This position will also establish and maintain any new device RD capabilities that are needed for the development of solution-processable HIL materials.

Principal Accountabilities:

1. Lead and/or be a key contributor to New Product development projects, plan & manage execution.
2. Use AP work process to capture ideas, develop projects proposals, have projects approved and prioritized.
3. Understand AP Advanced Materials technology that is applicable to Electronics, know how/when to leverage effectively.
4. Employs all AP EHS standards in daily work.
5. Be recognized as an expert OLED device physics.
6. Be capable of building, sustaining & leveraging relationships with key internal and external accounts customers and partners.
7. Be able to effectively work with multifunctional teams, develop and execute against shared goals, work with members who will be located around the globe.
8. Use scientific principles to describe and understand the results of applications testing and apply the results in project planning and execution.
9. Be able to lead a technician/chemist or a small team.
10. Document plans, results, key customer call, etc.
11. Ensure that all unique technology and solutions are protected by either patents or trade secrets.

Qualifications:

The incumbent should have a MS or Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering and at least 5 years of experience working with OLEDs. Relevant experience with Small Molecule OLEDs produced through the vapor deposition technique, and experience in the commercialization of new offerings, though not required, will be considered a plus. The incumbent should be able to build and maintain meaningful relationships with key customers. They should also be able to work in a multi-functional global team. They should be able to lead at least one technician and demonstrate a commitment to safety, work process, global technology transfer and diversity.

Practical laboratory skills and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for success in the position. Fluency in Korean, Japanese or Mandarin would be a plus. The position requires travel to partners, customers, education forums and industry events, including both domestic and foreign destinations.

Grade range for this position is 113-115. Lead Scientist [115] will show proficiency in all of the listed accountabilities.
